The village grown over centuries under Danish rule, a typically Holstein village with ca 350 inhabitants was formed by agriculture. In 1369 still called "de Iddest" it was first recorded in a contract in 1475 and belonged then still to the borough Tremsbüttel.
Until 1945 the population varied between 350 and 400 but nearly doubled to 700 until 1970. Till the turn of the century the population increased to far beyond 1.800 through new housing residential estates. One reckons with an increase up to 2.200 residents in the next few years.
Locally you'll find the fire station and the Bürgerhaus with great hall, the police station, the Sozialstationof theDRK, a post room, to doctor's surgeries, a dentist, two nursing homes and a kindergarten that was enlarged in the year 1999 with pretty new building. Paints and wallpapers, bakeries, hairdressers, one petrol station, further shops and workshops take care of everyday necessities and liven up the village..
A lovely ice cream café and several good restaurants, also a hotel adds to the offer for guests in Itzstedt as well as the three camping sites.
More shops and several supermarkets as well as a weekly market at the old train station (Fridays from 2pm to 6pm) in Nahe offer you good shopping options. Nahe is situated1 km awayand can be reached comfortably by bicycle. Located in Naheare also the primary and secondary school, the protestant church and a sports club with an extensive sports offer.
Itzstedt offers a lot of option for your recreational leisure time. First of all the Itzstedter lake with outdoor swimming poolin summer and ice skating in winter. There is further the tennis court of the ITC behind the Bürgerhaus, the sports shootingfacility of the shooting club with the annual shooting festival.
Lots of clubs and auxiliary aid organisations offer young and old diverse and interesting leisure activities. There is for instance the choral society " Melodia von 1877", the auxiliary fire brigade with youth fire brigade, DLRG and DRK, sports fishing, hunting club, riding and carriage club, saving club and seniors' club, country women's institute and last but not least the lower German speaking theatre group with annual productions.
Together with the four local political parties and the municipal council a varied selection of activities is being produced during the whole year.
